A DYNAMIC SCULPTURE ESCAPING FROM THE GRID
The stilt structures in Belo Horizonte have a unique spatial language. They are formed by vertical and horizontal elements in particular orders. They had been sitting there quietly for too long and we would like to arouse the interest of people by adding a tint of freshness to it. Our idea is to introduce a dynamic sculpture that appears to be escaping from the grid.
The sculpture is made up by 3 rectangular interlocking loops that tilted at different angles. The movement of breaking out from the grid was achieved by tilting, interlocking and protruding part of the loops outside the stilt structure. We further interlocked the loops with the grid so that the stilt structure could be seen as a part of the artwork. Spatial depth is also emphasized by the penetration of the loops through the negative space. The dynamic form, which is contrasting with the stilt structure and the surrounding, creates a sense of visual tension.
Each loop gives out a different color glow at night. Inspired by De Stijl, which is also known for the grid characteristic, colors red, blue and yellow were used. Each loop could be easily recognized with its distinct color and the interlocking would be more visible. The glow would wash colors on the stilt structure and turn it into different color zones. The LED light strips are installed in the large trough at the inner side of each loop. The inner surfaces of the troughs were sprayed painted in the same color as the light stripes so that the vibrant colors are also visible during daytime.
